You should know before you purchase this book that it's basically an expanded version of a paper the author, an academic, presented at the Hemingway Conference in Key West, and that only half of the book actually deals with Hemingway in Bimini and the rest is a brief history of the International Game Fishing Association. The writing bounces back and forth between overly chatty to turgid academic prose. The author has one map of Bimini in the front of the book but then refers constantly to places not located on the map, which is frustrating, and ends with a photo of her holding a pathetically tiny barracuda, which seems just sad when next to all the photos of huge marlin and tuna caught by Hemingway and friends. There's not really any information here that wasn't presented in a much more readable format in Hemingway's Boat by Paul Hendrickson, and I'm at a loss to understand this book's five star rating, unless the reviews were made by friends or avid sport fisher people...I found it a near total waste of time. This book adds to the Hemingway body of knowledge by covering a very important period in the writer's life; it also took me back in time to when I read Islands in the Stream and to the first time that I read The Old Man and the Sea; it took me back to better, simpler times; at different points in this book I was sitting on the beach at Hunting Island in South Carolina dreaming about the future and taking in the water and the scenery; at other points, I was wading by myself in a trout stream in Missouri and at other points I was fishing the South Holston in East Tennessee; as an IGFA member, I enjoyed the historical aspects of the organization that are covered. This book has also caused me to buy books by Zane Grey and others so it has helped me with the fishing section of my personal library. For these reasons and others I am indebted to the author for such a wonderful volume.
